What Can You Put in a Dumpster? What To Know Before Renting

Dec 12, 2023

Renting a dumpster is a great way to dispose of large amounts of waste. Whether you are moving into a new home, renovating your living space, or need to declutter your current one, renting a dumpster can make the process easier. However, you must know what you can and cannot put in a dumpster before renting.

Household Junk

Most of your household junk—old furniture, small appliances, toys, and general waste—can go into the dumpster. You now have the opportunity to remove that ancient sofa that refused to go gently into the night.

Note that chemicals, paints, electronics, and hazardous waste cannot go in your dumpster. Consult the rental service provider about safely disposing of these items.

Yard Waste

Landscaping and yard maintenance can produce a lot of organic waste, such as branches, grass, leaves, dirt, and soil. The good news is most rental companies allow yard waste since it can be processed into mulch or compost. Make sure you clarify with the rental service the types of yard waste they accept since it might have restrictions.

Construction and Demolition Waste

During construction, you’ll produce a lot of waste, including lumber, drywall, and concrete. Before renting a dumpster, you should know that the construction dumpster rental service provider may charge you extra for disposing of pipes, wires, and other hazardous materials. Make sure you understand what you can and cannot toss in the dumpster before signing the rental agreement.

Prohibited Items

You cannot legally or safely dispose of certain items in a dumpster. These items include hazardous waste, toxic chemicals, flammables, medical waste, asbestos, and other biohazards. Check with the rental company before renting a dumpster. The representatives can advise you on the safe means of disposal for hazardous materials and, in some cases, provide contacts for remediation.

Depending on your rental agreement, dumpster companies can accommodate your needs. Whether you’re renting for a day or a few weeks, you should make sure the dumpster can contain your waste according to its volume. If your project generates a lot of hazardous waste, let the rental company know so they can guide you to the best solution. Always be careful with what you put in a dumpster, and ensure you understand the materials that can’t go in it.
